Get Comfortable
Have the wet paper towel or glass of water beside you before you start. Cut a hole in the center of the paper plate just large enough for the candle to fit through. Fold the paper napkin into a strip.Put candle through hole in the paper plate and wrap the napkin around the small end of the candle. Lie on your side and gently place the small end of the candle into your ear canal just far enough to form a tight seal.
Hold the candle in place with your fingers under the plate to protect them from any ash that may fall off the candle. Do not squeeze the candle (this will close off the candle). Make sure the candle is straight up and down (plumb) before lighting.
You can also use our candles while sitting up. The instructions are the same except the candle will be horizontal rather than vertical, and the earcandle will not be inserted through the paper plate. Hold the plate under the earcandle to catch any ash that may fall from the candle. This method is not recommended for our express candles as the flame will be a bit too close to the head for safety, but can be used quite effectively with our original candles and is the recommended method with our beeswax candles.
Precautions and Tips
If you stop hearing this ocean sound while the candle is burning, the candle may be stopped up or the end in the ear may have become pinched. Just remove the candle and reopen the end and carefully replace it in the ear, or extinguish it and start a new candle.
The paper napkin wrapped around the small end of the candle serves as protection from the heat from your fingers that can cause the candle to collapse. It also helps to form a better seal around the ear thereby ensuring better vacuum.
Do not put any oil, witch hazel, or anything into the ear for at least an hour after candling. The ear will be warm, and anything cool can cause vertigo or other equilibrium problems.
Remember, less is more. Using too many earcandles can dry out the ear and cause itching in the ear. For this reason we recommend that you never use more that two candles per ear in a candling session.
Remove and Extinguish
When the candle has burned down to a third of its original length, remove the candle and extinguish the flame with the wet paper towel or dip it into the glass of water. Insert the next candle and repeat the process until the ear feels clear. You may want to put some witch hazel on a cotton swab and swab out the opening of the ear canal when you are finished.
