Contraindications for Ear Candling**

This age-old ‘home remedy' works to relieve pain and discomfort, and the warmth and smoke may assist the body's natural process to excrete impacted or infected earwax during the days after candling is performed.

The following list of contraindications should not be construed as being a complete list. There may be other reasons to not candle a person's ears.

The safest course of action is very simple: When in doubt, refer someone to a licensed medical doctor. Medical doctors will appreciate Ear Candlers who understand that they may be dealing with something for which they have inadequate training.

Do not use earcandles if you meet any of the following conditions.

  • Recent ear surgery
  • Cysts in the ear
  • Mastoiditis (Inflammation of the bone behind the ear)
  • Ear Drains (tubes) are present
  • Perforated ear drums
  • Meniere's disease
  • Vertigo
  • Osteosclerosis
  • Alkalosis of the stapes (Fusing of the bones in the middle ear)
  • Paracentesis (Surgical puncture of a cavity for the purpose of removing fluid)
  • Tumor of the ear
  • You are currently under the supervision of a medical doctor for ear problems.

Do not use beeswax earcandles if you meet any of the following conditions.

  • Allergic to bee stings. (We've seen similar advice on jars of unfiltered honey.)
